Technical and Scale Efficiency in Spanish Urban Transport: Estimating with Data Envelopment Analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper undertakes a comparative efficiency analysis of public bus transport in Spain using Data Envelopment Analysis. A procedure for efficiency evaluation was established with a view to estimating its technical and scale efficiency. Principal components analysis allowed us to reduce a large number of potential measures of supplyand demand-side and quality outputs in three statistical factors assumed in the analysis of the service. A statistical analysis Tobit regression shows that efficiency levels are negative in relation to the population density and peak-to-base ratio. Nevertheless, efficiency levels are not related to the form of ownership public versus private . The results obtained for Spanish public transport show that the average pure technical and scale efficiencies are situated at 94.91 and 52.02%, respectively. The excess of resources is around 6%, and the increase in accessibility of the service, one of the principal components summarizing the large number of output measures, is extremely important as a quality parameter in its performance.

Estimating Most Productive Scale Size with Double Frontiers in Data Envelopment Analysis using Negative Data
In this paper, it is assumed that the “Decision Making Units“( ) are consist of positive and negative input and output. Firstly, the optimistic and pessimistic models have been suggested by using negative data and then units with most productive scale size are measured in optimistic and pessimistic models. These productive values are compared with double frontiers and Hurwicz’s Criterion to obt...
متن کاملEstimating Efficiency of Thermal and Hydroelectric Power Plants in Iranian Provinces
This paper aims at estimating the efficiency of hydroelectric power plants (renewable energy resources) and thermal power plant (non-renewable energy resources) in Iranian provinces. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approaches is applied to estimate the efficiency. The network is modeled as a linear system with multiple inputs and one output. Fuel cost, labor force, operation cost are used as in...

Background & Aims: Hospitals as the largest and most costly operational units in health care system have special importance. The rate of their efficiency can be used as a criterion for the measurement of performance and productivity of resource consumption in hospitals. The purpose of this study was to determine the technical efficiency of general hospitals of Kerman University of Medical Scien...
متن کاملEstimating Most Productive Scale Size of the provinces of Iran in the Employment sector using Interval data in Imprecise Data Envelopment Analysis(IDEA)
Unemployment is one of the most important economic problems in Iran, so that many of its managers plan to increase employment rates. Increasing the employment rate needs to increase economic productivity which DEA is one of the most appropriate evaluation methods for estimating the productivity of similar organizations. Employment in the amount of data input and output can be just interval. In ...
متن کاملEstimating Returns to Scale in the Presence of Undesirable Factors in Data Envelopment Analysis
This research identifies returns to scale (RTS) of efficient decision making units (DMUs) with desirable (good) and undesirable (bad) inputs and outputs by presenting a new DEA (data envelopment analysis) approach. In this study, we first introduce a new input-output oriented model to determine efficient DMUs in the presence of undesirable factors and then, returns to scale of these DMUs are es...
